The Lockrose area was for a long time predominately a farming district until much of the land was subdivided into housing allotments during the 1990’s. Some farms remain with market gardening and crops. Only one dairy remains. The only community buildings in the area are the school and the Lutheran Church and the area also has a privately owned museum.
A tavern and general store are local enterprises. A new Woolworths supermarket and arcade of shops opened in 2006 at Plainlands, about seven kilometres from the school.
